Congressman Robert Pittenger is calling for a formal investigation into the Obama administration’s alleged interference in a multi-agency investigation targeting Hezbollah’s illegal drug dealing, money laundering and arms running.
On Monday, Pittenger sent a letter to Chairman Trey Gowdy of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform urging the body to look into allegations reported by Politico over the weekend that revealed the Obama administration shielded Hezbollah from the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Project Cassandra.
“Now, it appears in order to secure his deeply flawed Iran Deal, President Obama and his administration shielded the Iran-backed terror group Hezbollah from a major US multi-agency investigation targeting Hezbollah’s global criminal operation which included drug dealing, money laundering and arms running,” said Congressman Pittenger in a statement.
“These revelations are shocking and infuriating,” Pittenger continued. “While American soldiers were bravely fighting ISIS terrorists, with some paying the ultimate price, the Obama administration reportedly was protecting Hezbollah terrorists who were funding themselves by trafficking illegal drugs. No wonder President Obama couldn’t bring himself to call them ‘Radical Islamist Terrorists.’”
Project Cassandra, a campaign launched by the DEA in 2008, found that Hezbollah collected $1 billion a year from money laundering, criminal activities, and drug and weapons trade. The task force found that the Iran back organization was shipping cocaine through Venezuela and Mexico to the United States.
According to Politico’s report, published Sunday, Obama’s Justice Department refused to file charges against those involved.
“The administration also rejected repeated efforts by Project Cassandra members to charge Hezbollah’s military wing as an ongoing criminal enterprise under a federal Mafia-style racketeering statute, task force members say,” Politico reported.
The report also claims that the Obama administration blocked the Cassandra Project from receiving a number of legal tools that would have helped them halt Hezbollah’s illegal activities.
It apparently became more difficult for the DEA task force to conduct its investigation the closer the Obama administration came to finalizing the Iran nuclear deal. Task force members were moved to other assignments as soon as the deal was complete.
“As the operation reached into the higher levels of Hezbollah, the revelations threatened to undermine the Obama Administrations nuclear talks with Iran,” reads Congressman Pittenger’s letter to the House Committee on Oversight. “DEA officials on “Project Cassandra” purportedly faced increased obstacles from political appointees within the Obama Administration.”
Pittenger is calling for public hearings and the release of any documents on the matter.
Politico’s report sparked former Israeli Finance Minister Yair Lapid to demand Obama turn in his Nobel Peace Prize if the accusations are true.
“If the report is correct,” Lapid said on Monday, “then Barack Obama must return the Nobel Peace Prize he received.”
